Left by wife, man tries to jump from bridge

A JOBLESS man missed his wife and children so much that he attempted to jump from the Marcelo Fernan Bridge last Tuesday evening.

The man was identified as Arturo Caballes, 48.

PO2 Joy Grengia, of the women and child section of the Barangay Opao Police Station, said Caballes’ wife left him 11 years ago, bringing with her their two children.

She said Caballes asked for money from his sister in Mambaling, Cebu City last Tuesday to buy food. He went wild when his sister refused to give him money.

He tried to set his sister’s house on fire but was stopped. His sister drove him away.

Depressed

Caballes then walked from Mambaling to Mandaue City, a distance of about 20 kilometers, and climbed the bridge.

A policeman saw him climb over the bridge’s railing and called the Bureau of Fire Protection and Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation for help.

Rescue units arrived. Policemen also responded and started talking to Caballes.

It took the police two hours before they finally convinced Caballes to go with them to the police station.

Police notified Cabal-les’ relatives, who went to the station yesterday morning to fetch him. They went home to Mambaling. (OCP)
