City cops get P1.6M for firearms

THE Cebu City Council last week set aside P1.645 million to buy 90 firearms for the City policemen’s use.

The purchase will include 60 pieces of refurbished .38 revolvers worth P1.014 million and 30 pieces of .40 pistols worth P631,000.

City Councilor Augustus Pe Jr., council committee on public order and safety, sponsored two measures allocating the amount.

“As part of maintaining and providing better public service by the Cebu City Police (Office) personnel, there is a need to (give it) additional supplies,” read a portion of one resolution.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) asked for the 60 refurbished revolvers as many of its 1,011 personnel do not have government-issued firearms.

Wagenhaus Trading Inc. will supply the Smith and Wesson six-shot, four-inch barrel .38 revolver valued at P16,900 each.

In a letter to City Administrator Francisco Fernandez, Wagenhaus president Jaime Flores said they will also give “at no extra cost to the Cebu City Government” one Smith and Wesson Model .357 four-inch barrel revolver and one Smith and Wesson .357 six-inch barrel revolver.

Pe said Fernandez also proposed the purchase of 30 brand new .40 pistol at P21,054.66 each, which include the licensing and payment for clearances and other requirements, like fees for transport, notary and transportation.

The supplier also promised a one-year warranty and to process the guns’ licenses for the City Government.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña already gave his approval for the purchase, which, he said, should be subject to government bidding procedures.

Aside from the guns and usual assistance like fuel and monthly allowance to CCPO personnel, the City Hall has also recently purchased several vehicles now used by the Mobile Patrol Group and other special units. (RHM)
