Tuesday, December 18, 2007 Tabunok traffic clogs up as DPWH repairs bridge
TRAFFIC in Tabunok, Talisay City’s busiest commercial area almost grinds to a halt during rush hour because of the ongoing repair of one of Mananga’s twin bridges.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has to close one side of the two-lane bridge because a portion of its floor slab has sagged, said engineer Daisy Toledo of the Cebu 2nd Engineering District.
The closure slows down traffic that normally builds up towards the approach of the flyover in Tabunok.
The traffic jam affects only vehicles bound for Cebu City because southbound vehicles can still use the parallel bridge.
Toledo told Sun.Star Cebu that the repair will not take long because it is only part of the DPWH’s maintenance work on the bridge.
She said the repair of the sagging floor slab between the bridge’s piers 5 and 6 is scheduled to be completed on Friday. The repair started early this month.
In bridge construction, a pier is a vertical structural support between two spans of a bridge.
Notices
Toledo said they already made public notices about the one-lane closure, as well as issued an advisory that temporarily bars heavy cargo trucks from using the bridge.
To avoid heavy traffic in Tabunok, traffic police also advised Cebu City-bound vehicles to turn right at the junction in Barangay Lawaan and take the Cebu South Coastal Road. (GC)
