Cebuano tops Manila scrabble

CEBUANO ace scrabble player Teodor Martus Jr, proved he is one of the best players in the country after he bagged the Scrabble Christmas Tournament the other day at Greenhouse Grill in Quezon City.

After failing to make it to the individual final leg of the Philippine Open Scrabble at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City last week, Martus bounced back with last Sunday’s win.

Martus, rated number two in the national ranking, proved he is still a force to reckon with after he defeated rated players in the nine-round tournament.

Though he got only P1,500 for his win, Martus said it was a moral booster as he is set to play in the Philippine Open Scrabble grand finals on Dec. 27 and 28. Martus got another boost after RP’s top bet, Carmela Odette Rio announced she will miss the finals.

Martus said that of the 12 players who joined the competition, eight were rated in the RP’s scrabble ranking.

Martus scored a crucial win against No. 5 seed Marlon Prudencio in the final round by just four points.

Prudencio, on the other hand, had the chance to get the crown in his final round encounter with Martus but faltered.

Martus finished the tournament with eight wins in nine outings and a plus 644 spread. His only loss was at the hand of RP’s number one player and fellow world campaigner Rio. He also defeated Rio thrice in the said competition.

Rio finished at second spot with six wins and a plus 500 margin after she beat fellow world campaigner and RP’s number four seed Renaldo Credo in Board 2, but just 30 points. (NSM)
