Gendrauli powers Badian to second

KIMBERLY Gendrauli showcased her volleyball prowess once more as she steered Badian to its second straight win in the quarterfinal round of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women yesterday at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

Badian notched its second win after dispatching Tuburan, 25-13, 25-19.

Tuburan almost won the first set and had a 23-20, but Badian, behind the talented Gendraul and Melfa Gador, overhauled this deficit, scored the next five points to win the set. Tuburan failed to give a fight in the second set and handed the win to Badia.

Gendrauli, the high school superstar of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, had won various titles including the best universal player title in the national finals of the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League. Badian is the Cluster 2 champion and picked up Gador to beef up their roster for the quarterfinal round.

Gador played for Moalboal in the cluster eliminations.

Gendrauli is also looking at adding another feather in her cap as she is a candidate for best setter, best attacker and best blocker diadems.

Badian’s first win in the quarterfinal was over Daanbantayan, 25-15, 25-18, late Monday afternoon.

Badian now holds a 2-0 win-loss record and is currently at second place to bracket leader Catmon, which sports a 3-0 card.

Catmon, which is powered by high school players Methosheena Bate, Melanie Silvestre and Athena Sucalit, defeated two teams yesterday to take the top spot. It first trounced Compostela, 25-19, 25-14, before capping the day with another straight set win over Daanbantayan.

Bate is being eyed to take the best blocker and server diadems, while Silvestre is in the running for the best setter and best attacker awards.

Catmon, which is made up of provincial meet champions who are mostly high school students, is also paced by Jeremy Montalvo, who is the only college player in the roster.

Meanwhile, Liloan is leading in the race in Bracket A with three wins following its lopsided 25-11, 25-8 win over Sibonga, followed by 25-12, 25-17 victory over Oslob yesterday. (MCB)
