Saturday, December 22, 2007 Speak out: No pride as people By Grace Paradela
WHY can't we for just one moment be proud of ourselves as individuals?
I have tried to figure out why in all the lushness of our resources (and our biggest resource is our people), we cannot seem to find an answer to poverty and corruption.
It is probably because we do not have pride as a people.
Always, even during Jose Rizal's time, even our national hero longed to belong to another country and this is evident in his writings and in his works.
He thought as much as most of us think now, that if we lost our individuality as a nation, it would be best for our country as a whole.
If only each one of us, whether here in the Philippines or abroad, spoke clearly of our nationality with pride and hope, somehow, I honestly think it will make our nation rise above all the adversity and manmade calamities in which it is hopelessly immersed.
If each one of us, wherever we are on this earth, could clearly see how much good we have to offer to the other, how talented, hardworking, good natured, reliable workers we all are, we will not be able to tolerate corruption, poverty, ridiculous news and dishonesty amongst ourselves.
Why do we work to benefit citizens of other countries? Why can't we work to benefit our own nation?
Be honest, be responsible, work hard and aim for your best, expect high expectations from yourself. Do not tolerate laziness, tardiness, or corruption.
Why can't we be what we are meant to be? Why can't we make our Philippines the best now?
