Bantayan school gets 12 new classrooms

PRESIDENT Arroyo has committed to give eight classrooms to Bantayan to replace the classrooms gutted by fire last July.

Rep. Benhur Salimbangon (Cebu, 4th district) said he has talked to the President, who said that the funding she is giving will be coursed through the Department of Education (DepEd) of Cebu Province.

Salimbangon said the bidding for the construction of the building will be conducted early next year and the target is that the classrooms will be available for the pupils by June.

Salimbangon said he asked for 20 classrooms but the President only granted eight for now.

With Arroyo’s promise, the 12 classrooms gutted by the blaze are expected to be replaced soon, as the Provincial Government has also promised to give four classrooms.

In the third week of July this year, a fire hit the Bantayan Central School after power was restored following a blackout in Barangay Ticad.

The town had experienced a blackout for five hours and when the power was restored at around 7 p.m., the fire brokeout.

Residents near the school heard a sound that resembled the sparks from a welding machine.

The classrooms engulfed by the fire were used by the kindergarten and Grade 5 pupils as well as for industrial arts and the technology and home economics subjects.

One of the rooms was also used as a stockroom.

After the fire, Salimbangon has pledged to find ways to build a two-story school building with 20 classrooms.

Salimbangon represents the fourth district of Cebu and Bantayan is one of the towns in that district. (MBG)
