Banebane dominates Cepca grand finals
GRAND finalist Mike Banebane emerged the most victorious among the monthly winners of the Cebu Executives and Professional Chess Association (Cepca) after he won in the grand finals match over his opponent Saturday night.
Banebane, the winner in March, was crowned the grand champion after he defeated Zaldy Tabanao in their finals match held at the residence of Sun.Star sports columnist Frank “Boy” Pestaño in Mabolo.
Using Queen’s Indian and playing black pieces, Banabane beat Tabanao in just 31 moves in six minutes of sudden death match.
Draw
Tabanao, who had to play five minutes in his match up against Banebane, just needed a draw to claim the title but faltered. With the loss, Tabanao landed in second place.
In the battle for third place, Nic Cuizon, using Sicilian Najdorf, took the third spot when he defeated Mandy Baria in 36 moves.
Before going to the finals, Banebane along with Tabanao, Cuizon and Baria, emerged as the top four after four rounds of play in the Open division.
Banebane, using Alekhine, defeated Baria in just 37 moves while Tabanao, using King’s Indian, won over Cuizon in 51 moves in the semifinals match.
The kiddies, juniors and the side event were merged after only few participants registered. Yves Fiel, using Slav, claimed the title in the juniors division with 4.5 points when he defeated side event player Bob Inocian in 35 moves.
Cy Balbanera, Godfrey Villamor and Jessa Balbona wound up second, third and fourth place, respectively in the juniors division.
Kyle Sevillano who finished the tournament with 4.0 points, also bagged the title in the kiddies division after defeating another side event player Fabio Abosejo on a Queen’s pawn in just 27 moves.
Felix Shawn Balbona, John Francis Balbona and Marq Balbona completed the top four spots in their division.
Abosejo was declared the champion for the Cepca non-qualifiers/side event division when he won in a tie break with 14.5 points.
Abosejo, along with El Labunog, Inocian and Rene Casia, scored 3 points each but parted ways in the tie break point. (NSM)
