Give us bullet-proof vests: City police ask City Hall

THE local police formally asked the Cebu City Government to help them obtain bullet-proof vests to be used by operatives in responding to armed person alarms.

In a letter dated Dec. 28 to Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patrocinio Comendador requested that the police force be provided with 10 vests “to ensure the safety of our police officers while responding to alarms.”

The letter, which was sent through Vice Mayor and Police Coordinating Advisory Council chairman Michael Rama, cited two recent police operations that ended in the killing of rookie policeman Noriel Luage last Dec. 10, and wounding of operatives SPO2 Renante Nioda and PO3 Reynaldo Callet of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) in a shootout with an armed man in Barangay Inayawan last Dec. 25.

Except for Nioda, Luage and Callet did not have the protective vest during the operations.

“Recent incidents involving police operations in Cebu City disclosed that alike in many highly urbanized cities in the world, the criminals are becoming more violent each day,” Comendador’s letter read.

At present, the CCPO only has four bullet proof vests under the custody of the Mobile Patrol Group and the Swat. (JST)
