Cebu running club to stage Sinulog race

The Cebu Executive Runners Club, headed by new president Jesse Taborada, will be staging its first Sinulog 21K Half Marathon on Jan. 19 as part of the week-long Sinulog Festivities.

The race will start and finish at the Asiatown IT Park. It is sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association.

Taborada, in a meeting with club founding president Raffy Uytiepo and race director Joe B. Deresas, told Sun.Star Cebu that they are looking into the participation of out of town runners in the race since many people will come here in Cebu because of the Sinulog Mardi Gras the following day.

The tournament, which is backed by Mizuno and Shell, is open to all, not just members of running clubs. Organizers are also expecting runners from Bacolod City, Manila and Ilo-Ilo.

Organizers say they are expecting more than a thousand runners to join.

Taborada said they will be inviting representatives from the Patafa to measure the accurate distance of the race. Deresas said they contacted Patafa president Go Teng Kok to sanction the half marathon and Patafa representatives will be here next week to formalize the exact measurement of the race.

Uytiepo said the champion in the Men’s division will be receiving P20,000, the second placer will get P12,000, while the third placer will receive P8,000.

In the women’s division the champion will receive P15,000 while the second placer will get P10,000.

Organizers say big prizes are also at stake for the the 5K run for men and women.

Registration for the race opens on Jan. 7 at the Cebu City Sports Center near the entrance and at the Sugangan Restaurant at F. Llorente St. (NSM)
