Basilica rerouting
ALL vehicles are barred from entering portions of three roads by the Basilica del Sto. Niño starting Thursday up to Jan. 20 for the nine-day novena and on Jan. 25 for the traditional “Hubo.”
Jeepney routes that traverse Osmeña Blvd. from the corner of D. Jakosalem St. to P. Burgos St., and D. Jakosalem and P. Burgos from the Magalles St. corner to Osmeña Blvd. are rerouted.
Citom Executive Officer Arnel Tancinco said they designated as temporary parking areas P. Burgos and Legaspi Sts. right by the Patria de Cebu building, and the P. Burgos and Osmeña Blvd. sides of the WDC building.
Existing pay-parking bays like those by the Metro Cebu Water District building will also be available, he said.
Tancinco said the Basilica requested that vehicles not be allowed near its premises, for security concerns.
Also, he said that Magallanes St., specifically between the Magellan’s Cross and the City Legislative Building, will be closed starting this week because of the ongoing drainage work.
Workers are breaking the concrete for the project, which is designed to improve drainage of the newly renovated building.
The Archdiocese of Cebu has announced that the nine-day novena will be preceded by a penitential procession at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 10 that will start from Fuente Osmeña to the Basilica.
The Basilica also scheduled 10 daily masses for devotees at the Pilgrim Center throughout the novena days starting at 5:30 a.m., with an hour and a half in between masses.
The Hubo, where the Sto. Niño’s image is given back its ordinary clothes after the celebration, is also expected to draw a huge crowd.
Chief Insp. Jonathan Abella, Cebu City Police Office traffic division chief, said rerouting will take effect from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
