Speak out: Spectacle in Fuente Osmeña By Amado F. Cabaero
FIRST it was the faces of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Virgin Mary and of Joseph Estrada as Saint Joseph that were painted in a Nativity scene along Colon St., Cebu City.
Now, in Fuente Osmeña, we have the spectacle of Super Woman holding aloft an image of the Sto. Niño, with Superman, Spiderman, Batman (Tarzan was not included) looking on admiringly.
By using fictional characters, what message was sought to be conveyed to Cebuanos and to the thousands of tourists who will attend the forthcoming Sto. Niño fiesta celebration?
Why didn’t the people responsible for this atrocity put devotees like an old woman-candle vendor, farmer, fisherman or jeepney driver instead of the fictional characters?
Or, to add local color, as in the Nativity scene, they could have instead used on the characters the faces of local provincial and city officials.
