Speak out: Will Erap win in 2010?
By John Pala

THE first question that should be settled should former president Joseph Estrada run or be allowed to run for the presidency is, can he win?

Then we ask what chances he has of winning back what he lost.

And the third horrible question: What do we expect the country will become if that happens?

I think Erap stands a fairly good chance of winning if he runs.

There are, after all, different kinds of voters in our country:

--the minority that thinks objectively and stands by what they believe in and even risk their lives for it;

--the business group who care only for the opportunities that alignment with politicians, a crook or nitwit, would bring.

--most of all is the mass of people, the so-called masa, Erap’s hope.

But I do believe Erap cannot run and should not be allowed to run.

His having been pardoned didn't acquit him of his crime.

He was found guilty and was incarcerated.

Let us not waste our time even talking about the possibility of Erap running, whether in the Comelec or in Congress.

Let us simply accept him back into the folds of society as we would any released convict who has served his term or was pardoned or paroled.

They have recovered their right to fit in and find sources of living and fulfillment as citizens.

Let Erap enjoy his freedom, his remaining wealth, his health, and his family or families.

And allow the rest of society to work for economic recovery and political stability.
