Guardo eyes Donaire bout in Cebu City

IF Jonathan Guardo will have his way, world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will have his next fight here in Cebu.

Guardo, one of the prime movers of Cebu’s hosting of the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 and whose company has a six-fight endorsement deal with Donaire, is planning to negotiate with boxing promoter Gary Shaw to stage the next Donaire fight here in Cebu City.

“I think Cebu is a place fit for staging big fights. A lot of international bouts have been staged here and I think that we should have the next Donaire fight here in Cebu,” Guardo said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.

Guardo said Cebu City is already a legitimate venue for big international boxing bouts.

Though he hasn’t talked to Shaw about the plan yet, he plans to talk with the promoter through the Donaires or talk to him when Shaw arrives for the IBF eliminator bout fight between Gorres and Darchinyan on Feb 2.

However, Guardo will only be hoping that Shaw favors the plan as the promoter will have the final say.

“It is up to Gary Shaw if he will consider the next fight here in Cebu City,” Guardo said.

Donaire is eying to unify the belts in the flyweight division, a feat no other Filipino has done in the history of boxing. (EKA)
