Thursday, January 10, 2008 Ng: Miss Cebu voting By Wilson Ng Wired Desktop
IT'S 2008 and everywhere we see the people using technology more than ever.
If you think it is too early to give your kids a cell phone, you might be interested to know that 88 percent of 10-year-olds in Norway already have one.
According to Opinion Research, 71 percent of 9-year-olds there also have cell phones.
Not only that, another survey said that 35.5 percent of all web users from 18 years or older are now spending three hours or more a day on the Internet.
This does not include older people, but taking into account only those from 18 to 34 years old, over 40 percent now stay more than three hours on the Internet daily.
Cost of Internet access is going down regularly, too. Now you can get a personal DSL for less than a thousand pesos per month, and SmartBro just recently introduced its latest package that allows one to surf anywhere for only P799 per month. But this is not the same as Globe Visibility and PLDT WeRoam.
Technology continues its march, and it is changing the way business is done.
I guess the encyclopedia sales person has gone the way of the dinosaur since there are now free encyclopedia through the Internet. Picture chemical photo film sales are going down as well as more and more people use digital cameras.
MISS CEBU. I wrote earlier that it is now possible for you to vote for your candidates of Miss Cebu 2008 through www. itsngenius.com/mscebu2008. And I am happy that thousands have done so.
For those with Inter-net access, our company is also working with Micro-soft and Globe so that people will be able to vote for their candidates via texting.
You can text your vote to 09178902327. The text format should be MSCEBUCandidate name.
The voter’s email is just optional, and is for documentation/reporting purposes only. The 12 candidates you can vote on are: (you should use the exact name) Carol, Kathy, Prissy, Angel, Kirstie, Mai, Tiff, Karen, Marj, Sian, Raven and Jam.
The Internet voting is limited to one vote per one validated email address. The text voting is only limited by the fan’s willingness to pay 50 centavos or P1 per text vote. The Internet and SMS voting will be one of factors that will be considered in the giving of various special awards to the candidates.
The tally is done automatically through software. As of 1 p.m. yesterday, the following were the top three on the SMS voting: Tiff, 299 votes; Kathy, 273 votes; and Karen with 193 votes. Internet and SMS voting will close on Jan. 12.
