Saturday, January 12, 2008 Talisay to see more infra projects, new economic zone as it turns 7
THE completion of major infrastructure projects, establishment of a local economic zone and conversion of the Talisay City College into a state university are among the priorities of Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district).
Addressing the crowd during the 7th Charter Day anniversary of Talisay City yesterday, Gullas called on city officials to hasten the completion of the market-cum-terminal project in Barangay Lagtang.
He said the project still has a budget of P15 to P20 million from Malacañang.
Once completed, the market-cum-terminal will decongest the Tabunok area where the old public market is.
Gullas also plans to designate a 30- to 40-hectare lot for the Talisay City economic zone near the unfinished fish port project in Barangay San Roque.
“It is a good site for an economic development zone,” he said.
The legislator was confident that the current Talisay City College (TCC) will be converted into a state university 25 years from now.
A bill converting the TCC into a university is now pending at the House of Representatives.
The conversion will be advantageous to the City Government because the university’s funding will directly come from the national coffers.
Gullas, Talisay’s first city mayor and chief architect of Republic Act 8979, or the Talisay cityhood, also promised to institute unity among conflicting local city officials.
Although the ruling majority bloc dominates the City Council, both Vice Mayor Lani Abarquez and Councilor Alan Bucao remain in the opposition.
Mayor Socrates Fernandez also remains a close political ally of Gullas.
Gullas led in giving the awards to four outstanding Talisaynons and three charitable institutions for their outstanding feats and exemplary service to the public.
Prominent among the awardees was Lito Ruiz, husband of Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) and undersecretary for special concerns of the Department of Interior and Local Government.
The planting of Talisay trees around the vicinity of the Talisay City Hall also highlighted the celebration. (GC)
