MVBA Sinulog makes circle of six

SIX teams are scheduled to join the 2008 MVBA Sinulog Cup, which opens on Jan. 28 at the Cebu Coliseum.

MVBA Founder and Cebu City Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba said the tournament is scheduled to be the first of aseries of pocket tournaments that MVBA is scheduling for the year.

“It is already agreed that because of the Liga Pilipinas, which will open sometime in February, MVBA and the National Basketball Conference (NBC) will have to do with pocket tournaments. And the Sinulog Cup will be the first of many short tournaments that we’ll be organizing year round,” Alcoseba told Sun.Star-Cebu.

However, not one of the six teams from the last season has confirmed participation to the five-day event.

According to Alcoseba, Mindanao champion Holcim Pryce Pharma-Misamis Oriental is retooling while the MP Warriors has been disbanded after a woeful second conference performance.

Neither Duterte Agilas-Davao nor Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue has confirmed.

Arthro Kontra Arthritis remains to be heard from.

The Liga Pilipinas, a brainchild of former PBA Commissioner Noli Eala, united formerly competing MVBA and NBC under one roof.

Although both organizations will retain their identities, both are barred from holding a tournament other than a week-long competition.

The Liga Pilipinas carries a plot of regional competition in search for the newest crop of Filipino basketball stars. (RCM)
