Lapu fire station ‘best’ in region

THE Lapu-Lapu City Fire Station bagged the Best Fire Station in Region 7 award for 2007, the highest award it obtained despite being ill-equipped.

“Lipay mi kay usa sa benefit ani dili na lisod unya ang among promotion (This award will mean we can be promoted easily),” SFO1 Atilano Berido said.

Over 50 firemen are detailed in the city and some of them are in the sub-stations in Barangays Mactan, Santa Rosa, Marigondon, Babag and Olango Island.

The screening of awardees was done by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Manila.

Efficiency

Recipients had to pass the highest level in firefighting efficiency, discipline of personnel and maintenance of equipment.

A plaque of appreciation was also given to the City for being the most supportive local government unit to the BFP in Region 7. The awarding was held last month at the BFP regional office on N. Bacalso Ave. in Barangay Pahina Central, Cebu City.

Three trucks

Berido said that unlike the BFP offices in the cities of Mandaue and Cebu, they only have three fire trucks and one each in the four substations.

But he said they have been able to maintain efficiency and professionalism because of the City’s support.

He said the City gives them P600 in clothing allowance a year and P1,000 monthly incentive for each fireman. The City also shoulder the expenses for repair of equipment, replacement of worn fire hoses and for seminars outside Cebu Province.

“We were lucky we have this support and to repay it we have been doing the best we could,” he said. (AIV)
