Sinulog chess tourney may start after festivities

THE Sinulog Chess Fide-rated Tournament still hangs after organizers said they are still working out some details. But developments may come Monday after the Sinulog activities.

Chess event coordinator and a Fide arbiter Marvin Ruelan told Sun.Star Cebu that Cebu Chess Federation president Boojie Lim still does not have any statement yet for the said tournament. Lim, of the Rose Pharmacy chain of stores, which will mainly sponsor the event, will be in the US next week, said Ruelan.

However, he said, they will probably be holding the Federation Internationale Des Eches-rated tournament on the third week of February instead of this month.

Lim is now working on the requirements. He wants all Rose Pharmacy-sponsored chess events sanctioned by Fide-rating for players to qualify in international competitions.

Ruelan’s fellow Fide arbiter Roger Abella said they will have to wait until the Sinulog festivities are over to iron out the tournament details. Besides, he said, the national election for the board members of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines will be this Saturday yet. He said one of them might attend the election.

Abella said they are also waiting for the Fide international’s reply about the requirements on how to handle a Fide-rated tournament. He said that to organize a tournament is easy for them, but to form a tournament with proper ratings is a different story. He said it may be likely that this current tournament may have a Fide-rating. (NSM)
