Fashion at a bargain
By Jenara Regis Newman

ONE of the joys of shopping in street stalls is doing it “on the cheap” at the annual Sinulog bazaar, fronting Abellana National High School. The bazaar lasts till the end of January.

Here, asking for a discount of the quoted price is a given, and the savvy shopper would go there armed with knowledge of the prices of the goods he/she would like to buy. This way, the bargain will truly be a bargain because he/she will know how far to go for a discount.

A variety of goods are sold here, like leather and fake leather goods, plastic products including shoes, slippers, step-ins, sneakers, fashion and cell phone accessories, curtains, houseware, fancy and pearls, bags, belts, purses, Baguio City craft and yes, clothes for men, women and children.

There are T-shirts galore (including some Sinulog tees) and some fancy ones studded with crystals for ladies, and a particularly dressy kind with a medallion or brooch-like attachment at the neckline.

This is the place to buy loungewear, like printed, slip-on pants, “dusters” (i.e. sun dress) and caftans, saris and malongs (the woven, multi-colored cloth is now available with metallic print), and some beachwear.

Here is also where you can find a variety of stoles that will warm you up in cold weather. There’s even a fringed kimona top (a transluscent blouse worn over an inner garment) in the same material as some of the stoles—handy for when one is suddenly asked to go “Filipiniana.”

For the men, there are polo shirts in colorful “Malay” print, and there’s a particularly lovely Thai unisex shirt in one stall. For children, there are shorts and blouse/shirt sets. And for the war freak, there’s a stall selling all sorts of camouflage goodies: pants, shirts and bags.

But as always in places like this, one has to be a savvy shopper to get the right quality of the goods one wants’ and of course, one always has to be wary about snatchers at peak times where there is a crowd.
