Beauty with good advice is this year’s Miss Cebu

A VOICE actress who suggested that the Cebu City Government embark on more projects to promote environmental awareness was crowned Miss Cebu 2008 last night.

When asked what she advice she would give to Mayor Tomas Osmeña about Cebu’s tourism, Sian Elizabeth Maynard, 21, also suggested projects that will ensure the city’s sustainable development.

Aside from the title, she was also named Miss Belo Essentials.

Interviewed after the pageant, Maynard said her victory was “exhilarating.”

“Never in my wildest dreams (did I imagine winning),” said Maynard, who lends her voice to produce tapes and other instructional materials for those who are not proficient in the English language.

She went home with P50,000 cash and free trips abroad, among other prizes.

Completing her court are Kathy Lynn Atuel, Jam Charish Libatog, Priscilla Mae Honorio and Karen Nacario (first, second, third and fourth runners-up, respectively.)

They also won cash, free trips to Hong Kong and other gift items.

This year’s pageant carried the theme “Cebu Like No Other.”

Aside from production numbers, also featured during the show was a video of Osmeña and other City officials narrating a story, whose lesson, the mayor said, should be what Cebuanos keep in mind: have faith in us as we have faith in you.

Wide screens were set up in selected barangays while a pre-pageant was held last Saturday at the Fuente Osmeña rotunda to bring the pageant closer to the people.

Last night’s judges were Metro magazine editor-in-chief Melanie Elaine Cuevas, Cebu City Marriott Hotel general manager Roy Abraham, Binibing Pilipinas 1984 and Miss Universe third runner-up Desiree Verdadero-Abesamis, Plantation Bay’s Manny Gonzales, Intelligent Skin managing director Cristalle Belo Henares, Samsung Electronics area manager Louie Liston, and Sen. Loren Legarda, who chaired the panel. (RCT/CYR)
