Cabaero: Missing the fiesta
By Nini B. Cabaero
Beyond 30

TO many Cebuanos unable to witness this year’s Sinulog celebration because they are outside of Cebu or the country, there is a way to cope with missing the fiesta.

They have found websites on the World Wide Web where they could express their sentiment, commiserate with others feeling homesick too and witness via the Internet Cebu’s biggest annual celebration. As if the oceans parted for them and brought them home.

Here are some of their comments posted on the Sinulog 2008 message board found at the Sun.Star website at www.sunstar.com.ph:

“Hello Cebuanos! Our greatest celebration has come again. The sad part is, I can’t join the festivities in honor of our Sto. Niño. It’s so sad to think (that) for a communications volunteer who never missed Sinulog since 1995. Ayo-ayo nalang mo diha! Pit Senyor from Australia!”---Rover (rovercm@hotmail.com)

“Malipayong pagsaulog sa Fiesta Senyor Santo Niño. Wish I could be there to witness the Sinulog 2008. I miss it very much, if only I could have the wings of a dove.”--Junjun (cruisercrew92@yahoo.com)

“Viva Pit Señor sa Sugbo. We will be celebrating fiesta señor this coming Saturday, Jan. 19, here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Our choir conductor is Maestro Mel Villareal. A procession will be held inside the church because it is still winter here. Pictures will follow. From your fellow Cebuano here in Edmonton, this is Nito Villanueva saying Pit Señor.”---Leonito Villanueva (tagasebuko@yahoo.com)

“I really want to see and join the Sinulog festival because it has a precious place in my life and I do believe the Señor Sto. Niño is miraculous. I always pray for him to protect me in my life here in Japan. By the way, I wish to send my regards to my sisters and brothers and all my relatives. I hope they will pray for me. Happy Sinulog festival to all of you.”---Andy Andong (andong@soleil.ocn.ne.jp)

“We are going to Australia (from New Zealand) on Saturday, Jan. 19, for a two-week holiday. We will join our fellow Cebuanos in Australia in celebrating the fiesta senyor, the Sinulog. Of course, there will be shared lunch too.

Syempre di jud mawala ang lechon aron feel pod nga naa sad mi sa Cebu.

Viva Pit Senyor natong tanan.”---Esther of Hamilton, New Zealand (kshare_roxy@hotmail.com)

“Hello Cebu! Last year I was able to complete the nine-day Novena to Our Holy Child and also able to witness the Hubo for the first time in my life. I will surely miss the solemn feast. Pit Señor to all my immediate relatives and friends. I love you all.”---Dodong Tantiado of London, UK (frank@tantiado09.fsnet.co)

“I’m proud to be a Cebuano, especially that I'm from Lumad Basakanon. Greetings to all my friends from Basak, Ubos Puso, especially sa Boystown. Viva Pit Senyor! First time ni nako karon nga dili maka-saksi sa Sinulog.”---Jojo of Singapore (jobal_00@yahoo.com)
