THE Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) dominated Region 10 to rule their friendly Sinulog Chess Match at SM Deep Blue Café last Saturday.
After drawing their first series in 2005, Cepca scored another 7.5-4.5 win in the final round to clinch the title this year.
Cepca also scored a 7.4-4.5 win in the first round but got to a slow start and trailed, 0-4, early in round two after Misamis Executives and Professionals Chess Association scored four straight wins.
Dr. Leonidez Fernandez score Mepca’s first win in Board 3 against Dante Arguelles.
Fernandez’s win followed by Atiliano Tabamo Jr., at board 9 when he beat Emmanuel Matuco on a Queen’s Gambit in 34 moves.
Francis Kaaminiano and Dr. Rey Feliciano scored the last two points of Mepca after defeating Maggi Dionson and Nick Climaco, respectively.
However, the host woke up and scored seven straight wins of their own.
Rene Casia scored Cepca’s first win over Patrick Borbon at board 11 using Sicilian Dragon in 37 moves.
Mandy Baria, 2007 grand champion Miguel Banebane, Fritz Sandalo, Zaldy Tabanao, Percy Fiel and Jojo Moralla joined Casia in the winning column to give the host teamthe title.
On the other hand, Jojo Atillo (Cepca) and Engr. Rey Urbiztondo in board one fought to a draw of a King’s Indian Defense in 54 moves for the final game.
Still Mepca team didn’t go empty handed as Urbztondo, a gold medalist in the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association in 1984, took the Cepca Sinulog Blitz title against 19 other tough foes. (NSM)
