Monday, January 28, 2008 Speak Out: Flyover blues By Victor Mañalac
I LIVE in Pit-os. My wife and I will have to withstand the slow grueling drive when the odd-even scheme will be implemented.
Nevertheless, we both understand the reality of temporary sacrifice so the longer part of our lives will be more comfortable—when the flyover gets done.
I don’t think there will be a 100 percent correct solution to the expected problem of congestion in the months to come.
There will always be those who will be more badly affected and feel disgruntled. Each time the mayor will try to please one segment there will always arise another batch of complaining citizens. And there will always be the professional critics, who specialize in watching Tomas with hawk’s eyes as the paparazzi did Diana of England.
I believe that we should let him do the work that he has been used to—which is facing the reality of difficult projects and solving them head-on and parrying difficult criticisms.
For me, it is enough that a solution—the flyover—has been made and will push through. Tom made his point and even if flak were shot at him he stood his ground and made things happen!
Now that’s a good executive!
The end results expected will be worth the sacrifice. But maybe, just maybe, in the near future, our good mayor (Tom or another) will also begin to consider widening the Talamban to Pit-os road—and let the other lot owners make the extreme sacrifice of allowing expropriation of their front areas for the sake of the bigger population.
Perhaps the government could think of a juicy compensation for them to make the sacrifice worth their while.
