2 men kill driver right outside home

A JEEPNEY driver was shot and killed in front of his house in Barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City before dawn yesterday, as he was checking his vehicle’s engine.

Six empty shells from a 9mm pistol littered the area around Germenegildo Ybañez, 33. The two men who shot him, though he did nothing to provoke them, remained unidentified last night.

Argument

Homicide investigator PO3 Manolito Abellanosa said robbery or personal grudge are the two angles they are considering in Ybañez’s killing. In November last year, Ybanez argued with the driver of private vehicle that hit his jeepney on M.L. Quezon highway, Abellanosa said.

The private vehicle driver’s refusal to take responsibility for the accident set off the exchange, that almost led to a fistfight. The robbery angle was raised after Ybañez’s wife reported that her husband brought some money with him when he went out of their house at 4:30 a.m.

Abellanosa said nobody could give a description of the culprits because the portion of Osmeña St. where the attack occurred was dark. The neighbors left their houses to investigate minutes after the culprits had left.

Nobody could say what vehicle the culprits used, or whether they did manage to grab any money from the victim.

Abellanosa said that Ybañez took bullets in the head and chest, and he was rushed to the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. (AIV)
