Great night for boxing

FOR once, Z “The Dream” Gorres and Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan agree on one thing—this Saturday’s Now or Never card will be a fight for the ages.

Both fighters, who will be seeing action in the International Boxing Federation eliminator bout on Saturday at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino faced each other for the first time during the fight’s press conference at the Caspian room at Waterfront.

“I will show the people a great fight. I will knockout Gorres,” said Darchinyan.

Pointing to the Now or Never card he said, “I think there is a mistake here, it’s not ‘now or never’ but ‘never forever’ and he will be called Sweet Dreams Gorres.”

In response, Gorres, who lost to Fernando Montiel last year, simply said, “This will be a good fight. I’m very confident with my skills, I know myself and I have trained for five months for this. I’m going to give the people a great fight, and Vic, a nightmare.”

Gorres is 27-2-1 with 15 KOs, while Darchinyan is 29-1 with 23 KOs. The 32-year-old southpaw’s only loss was against Nonito Donaire Jr, who trained at the ALA gym last year.

Darchinyan also said his power will be the key factor come fight night.

On the other hand, Darchinyan said it is not cockiness that drives him to say he will knockout Gorres.

“It’s not trash talk. It’s trusting in one’s ability,” said Darchinyan.

His promoter, Gary Show, agreed and said “Vic really believes in Vic. He has a lot of self confidence and he can back it up in the ring.”

Confidence.

Shaw, who has been in the country for almost two weeks, also lauded the Aldeguer family and the ALA gym and said he has never received the same kind of treatment he got from his hosts.

However, Shaw, who also promotes Donaire, cautioned that come Saturday night, he will be all business.

“When we come out of the dressing room, I’d be a monster,” said Shaw. (ML with EKA)
