FOR most people, losing weight is an uphill battle. But for boxers like Z “The Dream” Gorres, dropping weight is just a walk in the park.

Months of hard work for Gorres—jogging, sparring, hitting the bags and mitts, shadowboxing, jumping ropes and doing plyometric exercises draw to an end today when he finally goes up against Vic Darchinyan for the International Boxing Federation super flyweight title eliminator at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City.

At the beginning of his training, Gorres was 10 pounds (lbs.) over the superflyweight limit, during the weigh-in yesterday night, he tipped the scales at 115 lbs. while Darchinyan equaled his weight.

All ALA Gym boxers must maintain a certain weight and they must not have an increase of more than 10 percent of their body mass. They follow a dietary regimen to avoid complications during the weighing-in for a fight.

“Our boxers’ excess weight should not be more than 10 percent of his weight. They also have to exercise and maintain a certain diet to keep them in shape for their upcoming fights,” Gorres trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor told Sun.Star Cebu.

Yesterday morning before the weigh-in, Gorres was two pounds over the limit but he easily shed the excess weight early in the afternoon.

Other boxers in the “Now or Never” undercard that made the weigh-in yesterday night were RP junior welterweight champion Mark Jason Melligen and Indonesia junior welterweight titleholder Tia Koswara, who both weighed equally at 141 lbs.

Romeo Jackosalem tipped in just right at 132 lbs. while William Kickitt was 1 pound over, but successfully shed the extra weight. He reached the weight limit which was 135 lbs.

Earlier yesterday, James Bacon weighed in at 126 ½ lbs while opponent Diosdado Perez was at 125 lbs, Rollen del Castillo and opponent Fabio Marfa had identical weights at 108 lbs, JV Tuazon equaled Rey Villar’s 111 lb weight and Alejandro Belonguel tipped in at 119 lbs while opponent Ruel Cuizon was at 117 lbs.
