Now or Never Part 2?
By Edri K. Aznar
Sun.Star Correspondent

AFTER a controversial split draw last Saturday in the International Boxing Federation super flyweight eliminator bout, Z “The Dream” Gorres is for a rematch with Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan.

“Our top priority is to let Gorres rest first. We will then watch the tape and review the fight and see where we went wrong. Then we will let Gorres decide what he wants to do next,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu

“We are open to a rematch but it is up to Darchinyan’s camp and the IBF if they are open to it,” he said.

Gorres, who now had two draws, against 27-wins and 2 losses, told Sun.Star Cebu after the fight that he was willing to fight Darchinyan, “anytime, anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Aldeguer said he has no problem with how the judges saw the fight and thought they did a good job.

However, Aldeguer thought Lance Revill did poorly in controlling the fight.

“Revill could have done a better job controlling the match,” said Aldeguer.

The tension started when Revill called a slip as a knockdown, sparking a flurry of water bottles.

Meanwhile, in the undercard of “Now or Never” RP junior welterweight Mark Jason “MJM Grand” Melligen dominated the fight from start to finish to beat Indonesia junior welterweight Tia Koswara by unanimous decision after a 10-round slugfest.

ALA boy Millegen was the aggressor the whole time throwing jabs and connecting with two and three-punch combinations, while Koswara mostly hit air most of the time.

Frustrated by the defense of Millegen, there was nothing the tattoo- covered Indonesian could do but just smile at the end of every round. Millegen won, 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91 to improve to 10-1 with 7 KOs, while Koswara dropped to 15-6-2 with 8 KOs.

Special bout

In the special bout, up and rising Australian boxer William Kickitt remained undefeated after a unanimous decision victory over Romeo Jackosalem.

Kickitt, the leaner fighter, manhandled Jackosalem and landed a powerful haymaker in the third round that sent his foe to the canvas. Still dazed from the thunderous punch, Jackosalem beat the count but was immediately attacked by Kickitt with a flurry of lefts and rights. Luckily, Kickitt failed to capitalize as Jackosalem was saved by the bell.

The boxer from Davao never gave up and fought toe-to-toe with Kickett until the end of the match.

After the end of the sixth round all the judges were in favor of Kickitt scoring 60-53 (twice) and 57-55. Kickitt’s record is still unscathed at 9 wins and no loss with 4 KOs.

Meanwhile, James Bacon (4-1, 3 KO’s) of ALA Gym won his fifth fight by unanimous decision against Diosdado Perez (2-3, 0 KO’s)of the Dagdagen Stable; ALA Gym’s Rollen Del Castillo (16-5-1, 7 KO’s) was victorious against Fabio Marfa via TKO in the seventh round.

Marfa called it quits and his camp threw in the towel at the start of the seventh round. Rey Villar (1-2-1) won his first career victory after a unanimous decision over the fighting doctor JV Tuazon (0-2-1).
