Cops get camera from gas station
POLICE are pinning their hopes on the recorded footage of a surveillance camera in identifying the robber who killed a gasoline station guard in Barangay Bulacao, Talisay City Tuesday night.
As of yesterday, the robber, who ran off with an undetermined amount of cash, remained at large.
“If he was caught on camera, it will help a lot in our investigation. We have no identification yet,” said Talisay City Police Station Chief Romeo Perigo.
Perigo was scheduled to check the recorded video footage in a meeting with the owner of CHY Petron Station at noon yesterday.
Homicide investigators believed, though, that the robber was an amateur because he hastily left part of the loot while fleeing on foot toward the interior of Sitio Hawod, Bulacao.
He reportedly panicked when a police team and civilians chased him after he fatally shot night shift guard Roger Sebastian, 47, and barged into the cashier’s booth past 8 p.m.
Sebastian, of Big JR Security Agency, died at the Talisay City District Hospital in Barangay San Isidro an hour after the robbery. He had gunshot wounds in the right thigh and left side of his body.
Lawmen recovered a red cap and a dark blue jacket. They also found a deformed slug from a handgun at the crime scene, which the PNP Crime Laboratory in Cebu City examined.
Perigo said they have not accounted for the exact amount of the recovered cash, as the civilians directly turned these over to the owner.
Armed
Initially, the owner told him that the robber could have taken away an estimated P15,000 to P20,000 from the cashier’s booth.
Cebu Provincial Police Director Carmelo Valmoria directed the Talisay City Police Station to give priority to the investigation.
Valmoria said the investigators are trying to establish if the lone robber had any accomplices when he pulled off the “very daring” heist.
He plans to ask the Firearms, Explosives, Security Agencies and Guards Supervision Section to inspect the security agencies in Cebu, to determine if their guards are fully equipped while at work.
There is also a need to check with the security agencies whether they trained their security guards well, he said. Valmoria, however, said he does not want to blame anyone for the incident. (GC/JST)
