Follow rules, Dumanjug council urged

A DEPARTMENT of Interior and Local Government (DILG) official said the agency cannot step into a conflict plaguing the municipality of Dumanjug, without a formal complaint filed before the agency.

“The governor should come in,” said Pedro Noval, DILG 7 regional director.

However, he also said the internal rules of the council should be followed in case of confusion on who will sit as acting presiding officer in the absence of the vice mayor.

“They should follow their internal rules,” said Noval.

The municipal council’s scheduled session last Wednesday did not push through because the opposition, which constitutes the majority, wanted to elect their presiding officer.

The minority argued that this should not be the case, as the rules state that the councilor with the highest number of votes will automatically assume the post if the vice mayor cannot make it to the session.

Councilor Efren Gica, the town’s number one councilor, has also asked Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia to mediate between the administration and opposition camps.

The governor earlier requested all officials to unite. (KNT)
