600 run for the heart, and counting

AT LEAST 600 runners have already registered in the “Run for Your Heart” in tomorrow’s race, at 5 a.m., at the Cebu Doctors University Hospital Gym.

PHC president Dr. Peter Mancao, who also heads the CSI-Cardiac Surgery Institute of Cebu Running Club, yesterday told Sun.Star Cebu that they expect 700 runners to join Sunday’s race and although some top school-base runners are busy for the Regional Private Schools Athletics Association meet this time, he said they are expecting them to also join the event.

Mancao also expects the top local runners to join.

The Philippine Heart Center Medical Alumni Society Cebu Chapter is organizing the event.

It aims to promote healthy lifestyle and encourage participants and their families to attend the Lay Forum on Sports Injuries Prevention, which will be held as part of the post-race activities at the CDH gymnasium

“This event is just for the running enthusiasts to encourage people to take running as a sport,” Mancao said.

New York City Marathon finishers Dr. Yong Larrazabal with his Sight First Clinic Running Club and Dr. Mancao will lead the pack of runners along with last month’s Sugbo and Sinulog half marathons’ top finisher Emily Chiongbian and his husband Frederick, Fun Run chairman Dr. Alex Junia, as well as Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama, who will be firing the starting gun, and Councilor Edgar Labella.

Rama and Labella will run for the 6K race, said Mancao.

The registration fee for the run, which is divided into 10 and 6K events, is pegged at P150, said Mancao.

Mancao said the Cebu Road Runners Club (CRRC) will provide technical support.

Raymund Silot of CRRC is race director.

Registration for the 6K run will still be accepted on race day while the deadline of registration for the 10K event ended yesterday.

The 10K race has the Open, Executive and Doctors categories while the 6K is exclusively for the Mactan Export Processing Zone employees, the race starts and finishes at the CDU gym. (NSM)
