Friday, February 15, 2008 Group holds adventure racing for couples
THE usual Valentine’s date will have a new face as the Valentine Adventure Race takes off tomorrow at the Outpost Restaurant.
“We are introducing this new alternative to dating as we added a new twist to the usual Valentines stuff,” said organizer Ian Wilson Espina during the press conference at the Binugoy’s Restaurant Wednesday night.
The race, which is a collaboration between the Cebu Mountaineering Alliance (CMA) and Iamik’s Chicken and Beer, is an adventure race designed solely for couples.
Couples need not be a boy and a girl and can be all-girl or all-boy.
“This will give the couples a chance to deviate from the boring dating stuff for Valentines Day and try another thing. And they will see how much fun it is doing this together,” Espina said.
Espina added that this will give partners a chance to get to know each other better through the obstacles that they need to get through together.
The couples who will be taking part in the event will be challenged to obstacles such as Pinoy games or eating chicken heart to demanding disciplines like rappelling from an 80-meter drop from the Marcelo Fernan bridge.
There will be 10 check points in the race scattered all over Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu City. The race will start at the Outpost Restaurant at 10 a.m. and finish at the Iamik’s in Mabolo.
CMA’s Ricky Sevilla said that their aim for the race is to promote adventure racing and to entice more people to get into the sport.
“We want to encourage more people to try adventure racing as a sport,” said Sevilla, who had organized several local adventure races in the past.
That is why for this race, they are only allowing novice racers to join, for them to have a feel of what it is like to be in an adventure race. He added that they made sure that obstacles will be tolerable for the first timers to deal with.
The slots for the participants are limited but organizers are accepting entries until tomorrow. Registration fee is P250 per person and interested participants may contact Espina at 238-2366. (MCB)
