Thirsty Cup fires off this afternoon at CCSC

TODAY will be the beginning of three days of non-stop fun and excitement for all ages of footballers and fanatics alike as it marks the start of the three-day football marathon in the 5th Thirsty Football Festival at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

There will be a short opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. then the games will immediately begin. Nine games will simultaneously start in nine pitches.

The event offers competition in 14 different categories and is by far the largest tournament outside of Manila, with 225 participating teams. Last year, the event only attracted 130 teams.

Annual fiesta

Because a lot of teams outside of Cebu have joined this annual festivity, the organizers think that Cebu could be a national spot for football tournaments aside from Manila.

“This will be good for Cebu sports because teams outside of Cebu will not only look for Manila as the place to go for football tournaments but also Cebu,” said organizer Neil Montesclaros.

“The thing that makes our tournament unique is our night games because tournaments in Manila finish in the afternoon and they don’t have night games,” said Montesclaros on the difference between Thirsty Football Festival from the tournament in Manila.

With the Cebu football scene getting bigger every year, Thirsty organizer Charlie Pages thinks that Cebu needs a bigger venue for football games.

“If more teams will join next year we need to have a bigger venue,” said Pages. (EKA)
