Monday, February 18, 2008 That Prom Night By Nikki Taylor
FLOWERS, dresses, tuxedos, shoes, sandals, make-up, hair, bag, food, dessert. All these words appeal to young boys and girls these days. Scanning through every pile of magazine, watching television channels that feature the latest in fashion, getting information off the Internet and gossip from friends--these are the makings of an unforgettable event.
And asking someone to be one’s partner is a dread and excitement that rocks you at the edge of your seat. But in the end, it’s all worth the effort because the memories you will share with the people you spent your high school life with will last for a lifetime. Wouldn’t it also make a good story to conclude your high school diary?
I have vivid memories of my prom. Girls in pink, baby blue, red, yellow, gold--all the pretty colors you can think of. Everyone comparing their designer gowns, make-up artists and jewelry. Seeing everyone all made up was one of the highlights of my high school life. For sure, most of the girls are not into these things, and those who love it are prepped up in the most glamorous way. It’s all about being a lady and showing your feminine side, especially to your prom or graduation ball partners. I believe one of the most difficult time in our high school life was the moment we had to ask a guy to be our partner.
For me, I just had to ask my high school crush out or no one else. Believe me, I was too shy to do it, so with all my guts and whatever dignity I had left, I asked him to be my prom partner, clueless that prom night would be one of the most unglamorous but unforgettable nights I will ever have. And because so many stupid yet hilarious things happened that night, it left us with a lot of happy memories.
Proms or graduation balls should be looked forward to not because of all the glamour, but because of the friends you will spend it with. This is usually event when you reminisce all the fun times in the last four years since high school life is just about to end.
Memories made on this occasion are really something for the books and should be enjoyed to the fullest. That boy you held hands with, that batch mate you laughed at, that teacher you’ve always hated but you smiled at anyway and that classmate you gossiped with are just some of the things you will surely talk about during high school reunions, a dozen years after your prom night.
High school prom or the grad ball comes only once in your lifetime, so make the most of it and have a blast, even if your crush gives a clear and emphatic “NO.”
