Police vehicle loses brakes, runs over crowd

A POLICEMAN driving his unit’s patrol jeep ran over a group of bystanders, including a pregnant woman and her daughter, in Tuburan town late Saturday afternoon.

The mother and daughter are in critical condition and are confined at a hospital in Cebu City.

PO1 Vaughn Lim Arriola, 30, was driving the patrol jeep acquired by the Cebu Provincial Government for use of the Regional Mobile Group.

Arriola, who is with the RMG Bravo Company assigned in the detachment in Barangay Kampoot, Tuburan, was headed for Tuburan proper when he came across a “speeding vehicle” running in the opposite direction.

Arriola claimed he tried to apply the brakes but it did not work and the vehicle continued running.

He accidentally hit a group of people who were standing by the road in Sitio Panas, Barangay Daan Lungsod, Tuburan.

Wounded were Annabelle Verallo Jerusalem, 23, her two-year-old daughter Marjorie, Steward Pintoy Labajo, 17, and Teofilo Parilla Villanueva, 16.

Annabelle was wounded in the head, knees, body and arms while Marjorie suffered injuries on her forehead.

Treatment

Labajo suffered wounds on his head, left knee, right arm and left shoulder while Villanueva suffered wounds on his left foot, left side of his body and left leg.

Arriola brought all four to the Tuburan District Hospital and drove Annabelle and Marjorie to another hospital in Cebu City for further treatment.

Police in Tuburan said Arriola paid for the hospital bills and was constantly looking after the mother and daughter. (MEA)
