Foundation U beats Davao for Ladies crown

IT WAS the turn of the visiting teams to rule the Ladies Open as Foundation University (FU)-A outlasted the gritty Davao LFC in a penalty shootout to take the crown in the final day of the 5th Thirsty Football Festival at the Cebu City Sports Center late last night.

FU banked on the solid goalkeeping of Shirly Yumol for their 2-0 penalty shootout win as the keeper blocked all three shots from Davao, while Karen Ladero and Lily Balasabas converted their penalty kicks.

FU, which defeated another favorite and visiting team, La Salle Bacolod, 1-0, in the quarterfinal were tied with Davao at 1-1 at the end of regulation.

The veteran Leonor Satorre gave Davao a 1-0 lead with a thunderous strike in the 14th minute before Mary Jan Paez equalized at the end of regulation.

Team effort

“We were just lucky because Davao was a tough opponent. It was because of our team effort that we captured this victory,” FU-B coach John Paul Abejero told Sun.Star Cebu after their win yesterday.
In the elimination, both FU-B and Davao posted undefeated records.

FU-B defeated the defending champs University of San Carlos 2-1 in a penalty shootout, again banking on the prowess of Yumol who blocked two of three shots.

USC got their shot for glory in the Boys 19 after defeating University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, 1-0, to take the crown.

In the 36-above category San Roque FC defeated Don Bosco Alumni also via the shootout to take the first place.

Meanwhile, DB United B, People Support, FU and SRFC made it to the semifinal round of the Men’s Open.

DB United B defeated CSCST, 1-0, in the quarterfinals, while FU A outlasted Queen City, 1-0. San Roque FC also defeated Pinoysoccer.com, 1-0, while People Support outlasted USC, 1-0.

DB United B was set to play People Support in the semis, while FU-A was to face SRFC in the semifinals late last night. (EKA)
