Tuesday, February 19, 2008 Art solo debut By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
AS AN art student, Michelle Escamillan was an aspiring abstractionist. But she will soon formalize her desire to be a certified abstractionist when she opens her first solo exhibition, A Haven of Eloquent Emotions, on Feb. 23 at the Gabriela Art Gallery along Banilad road.
The show features a vibrant collection of abstract works that are non-objective or non-figurative in composition.
According to the artist it “doesn’t attempt to represent the recognizable form or effect of objects.”
The technique she uses is a fusion of painting and collage. She manifests in her works a free-wheeling spirit and unrestrained energy bursting with gestural brushstrokes.
The artist employs mixed media: a combination of indigenous and traditional objects, like paint and any native, raw materials. The exquisite texture of unprocessed, ethnographic materials brings out the character solidity, and lends roughness and vigor to modern contemporary artworks.
This is her “commencement” show and a requirement for graduation. From here on her art world will grow larger and rest assured, she’s ready to face anybody or anything out there in the real world.
