Schoolgirl Play
By Kara Mae Muga Noveda

YOU may have graduated from elementary school a long time ago, but you can relive the good old days with girlish ensembles that’ll fit a grown-up Lolita.

The formula schoolgirl uniform would look like you came straight from the pages of a Japanese comic book. To retain that charm without the costume-like effect as there are less risky variations to this preppy wear (so that you won’t have to be conscious of an inevitable up-skirt incident when you move around).

Instead of going for the Peter Pan collared blouses and pleated skirts, you can play it down with jumper-dresses and long cotton shirts.

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

The key to these feminine tops is the length. The over-all loose fit makes it a versatile piece which can pretty much go with any bottom from your closet. If you have a long upper body, keep it above the knee. A shorter length would likewise fit the petite frame. Taller girls can keep it safe with a shirtdress that falls slightly below the knee.

These plain dresses leave much room for creativity and personalized styling. You can dress them up with accessories, and cut the monotony with a belt. If you’re long-waisted, put emphasis on your mid-section. Otherwise, you can gather your waist at the empire cut.

Jumper-dresses are perfect staples for cold summer nights. Transform the casual jumper into multiple looks by simply changing the inner shirt.

GETTING IN THE RIGHT TIGHTS

Covered legs are one of 2007 trends that have successfully leapt to this year, so make sure your panty hose stays in top condition.

Choose a higher “denier.” That’s the width of the thread used to make the hose. Super-sheer hose are typically 7 to 15 denier; upgrade to a tougher 20-denier sheer. Opaques are a minimum of 30 denier but can go to 70 or higher. If the hosiery packages don’t list the denier count, stretch a few brands over your fingers and pick the one that gives the most resistance.Minimize run risk. Choose shiny tights — they’re made of slick yarns that don’t catch as easily on furniture or jewelry. Wear a just-washed pair because clean hose will cling better instead of hanging loose, tempting your cat or toddler to grab hold. For the most snag-resistant fit, look for hosiery made with at least 10 percent spandex.Wash with love. Hand-washing is the way to go with these tights. But if you don’t have the patience, place hose in a mesh lingerie bag, put the machine on delicate, stop the cycle before spin, and hang. Resist the urge to put tights in the dryer — you’ll get pilling, stretching, and static.
