Friday, February 22, 2008 Beach volleyball to close Cesafi
CEBU Schools Athletic Foundation Inc commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy can almost heave a sigh of relief as the last of the 14 sporting events is set to be completed.
After years of being included in the roster of events for Cesafi, it will only be this season that beach volleyball will finally see the light of day starting Monday.
The beach volleyball competition will punctuate a successful and colorful season of the Cesafi, which by far had drawn the most attention and audience response in years.
“I can finally step down once we can finally declare to have successfully staged all 14 sporting events and all 10 cultural and academic competitions,” said current commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, who had submitted his resignation letter last year yet and is only waiting for all events to be staged before leaving his post.
The beach volleyball competition will be held at the beaches of Inayagan, Naga and will follow an international format. After a round robin, the team with the most number of wins will be declared the champion.
However, before it started, the competition hit a snag after national Nestea Beach Volleyball champion team, University of the Visayas snubbed the competition.
UV head coach Raffy Briones said that because the beach volleyball competition of the Cesafi had been cancelled before, he did not think it was going to push through this year.
Briones added that he had instead prepared his wards for their title defense of the M. Lhuillier and Nestea Beach Volleyball competitions, all set this summer.
Other schools are, however, up to the task and will be seeing action in the first ever beach volleyball event of the Cesafi. (MCB)
