Edsa sportsfest

FOR the third straight year, the Philippine Sports Commission is celebrating the anniversary of the Edsa People Power 1 revolution in a language it can relate to—sports.

In a memorandum sent to all officials of the PSC, chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said that the event should follow the Edsa People Power commemoration -led theme, which is Kapayapaan at Pagkakaisa Tungo sa Kaunlaran.

The incorporation of sports in the annual commemoration of the People Power started after the Philippines claimed the overall title in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in 2005. With this, president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo sought the active participation of athletes in this event.

Different events will be held in the key cities of the country—Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Bacolod—and will be overseen by the different commissioners. Assigned in Cebu is commissioner Ambrosio de Luna, executive director Fr. Vic Uy and Cebu point person and consultant Dr. Danilo Villadolid.

The event in Cebu, which will be held at the University of San Carlos Main gym, will be a basketball showdown and cheerdance exhibition from the teams of University of Cebu, Southwestern University and USC.

Taking part in the basketball event will be the UC Lady Webmasters and USC Lady Warriors in the first game, where they rekindle their rivalry. The two teams battled it out for the Cesafi title last year, which USC won. Following this will be the exhibitions in cheerdance and dancesport. (MCB)
