Sunday, February 24, 2008 GCSOC to support Junio's world record bid
AFTER a long hiatus, the Greater Cebu Sports Organizing Committee (GCSOC) is back on track and is midway in its preparation to give local athletes chances to compete abroad.
GCSOC, the brainchild of sportsman Jonathan Guardo, is focusing on two main projects for the first half of the year which they call the Project Alcatraz.
"The focus for the next few months will be completing our list of delegates for the San Francisco International Children's Games and to support swimmer Justin Junio in his bid for a world record when he tries to cross the San Francisco channel to Alcatraz, which will all happen in July," said executive director Allan Torrevillas.
Torrevillas said in the ICG stint, they are going to duplicate their selection for last year's Arafura Games, where they came up with the best finish for Cebu ever.

"We may not bring as many athletes but they will be the best," said Torrevillas.
Although the list has not been completed, Torrevillas said that there are four players already assured of slots to the Cebu delegation in the ICG, the sister-and-brother tandems of Sally Mae and Bernardine Siso and Jacob and Jessica Lagman.
Torrevillas said they are making up for the Sisos after they broke their promise to bring them to Arafura because they were underaged. The tennis siblings, who have been considered Guardo's favorites, will get their chance this year.
Apart from this, Guardo will also bring the Team Cebu City Under-15 to represent Cebu in the 6-a-side football competition. This team was catapulted to fame after winning the Philippine Olympic Festival, a feat which earned them Cebu's team award during the Charter Day awards.
Torrevillas added that they are still contemplating on who to bring for swimming, table tennis or even track and field.
Meanwhile, Guardo is bent on supporting young swimmer Junio, who will attempt another record-breaking stint in July. GCSOC officials and Junio's father retired Air Force Colonel Florencio Junio will meet next week to discuss the support. (MCB)
