Cebu jins train hard, see big break in national tournament

THE Cebu City taekwon-do team representing Region VII has a big chance of winning in the upcoming National Private Schools Athletic Association, which will be held in April in Zamboanga City. The team in undergoing rigid training.

So said University of Cebu coach Alberto Banzon yesterday in the Scoop (Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines) forum.

He said they are now preparing hard for the competition, spending two hours in their daily practices.

His assistant, Jorge Rodriguez, said their chance of winning is almost a hundred percent already.

“We are now on a very rigid training from Monday to Sunday. We spend two hours in our daily practice and most of the time in the morning,” said Banzon.

Banzon said that this is the first time that taekwondo jins are mostly from Cebu City. Last year, it was half Cebuanos and the rest Boholanos.

Rodriguez said they are praying not to meet the National Capital Region team earlier as they might lose in a close fight, which happened in the past.

However, he said, his team’s toughest opponents are those from Region III, particularly in Pampanga and from Region VI in Bacolod or Ilo-ilo City.

The team is composed of 14 players, 11 of them are from Cebu and three are from Bohol.

Aside from Banzon and Rodriguez, five of their team members who won gold medals in their respective categories in the Regional Prisaa earlier this moth, Epraline Salo, Julie Eve Dublin, Heziel Yen Yosoya of UC, Karen Joy Fontanilla and Gerald Paglinawan of Southwestern University were also in the forum.

They showed some of their skills yesterday through a demonstration of the 45-degree jumping round house, turning side and long kick. NSM
