Motor race hurts 5 teenagers
SIX teens who were watching a motorcycle race in Sibonga town were wounded Saturday night after two racing motorcycles collided and headed straight toward them.
PO1 Joey Moreno, desk officer of the Sibonga Police Station, said they had been receiving complaints about a group of teenagers racing motorcycles late at night on the highway between Sibonga town and Carcar City.
The complaints began since February.
Moreno said they did not occupy a big area, just 200 meters, and that the racers bet among themselves who reaches the end of the line first.
Even if they posted an informant in the area to call them as soon as the racing starts, Moreno said they always failed to catch the racers because they would disperse at the sight of a police patrol jeep.
“Kusog kaayo managan ilang motor, dili gyud namo maapas. Karon, niresulta na gyud kay nadakpan na ang duha (Our vehicle is no match for their motorcycles. Now, we finally caught two of them),” Moreno said.
In Saturday night’s race, the two reportedly bet P500.
Police have in their custody Dante Bansalao dela Peña, 22, and Jessie Solon, 27.
Dela Peña, who hails from Barangay Liboron, Carcar City, drove the black Suzuki 110 motorcycle. He only had a student’s permit.
Solon, who is from Poblacion 3, Carcar City, drove a blue Honda Wave with plate number 7D 7164.
The race began in Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City. At 10:25 p.m., when they reached Barangay Apogon, Sibonga, the two motorcycles collided and the two drivers lost control of their vehicles.
They crashed into a group of spectators. They were identified as John Leonard Añasco, 18, Junnel Baclanan, 19, Samuel Gempesao, 16, Jerven Ceronio, 14, Bernabe Unabia, 16, and Jordannyl Baclaan, 20.
They were taken to the Carcar City District Hospital for their injuries and were later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City.
Moreno said they could not yet say who among the six suffered the most as they have yet to hear from their families.
Police believe a group of 20 members compose the racing activity. (MEA)
