Spiking Jaguars top beach volley

THE championship tiara of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) beach volleyball competition is virtually in the bag for the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) women’s team after sweeping all of its games last weekend at the beaches of Inayagan.

The Grace Antigua-mentored USJ-R squad manned by Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon, showcased their veteran form to win over the neophyte team of Southwestern University (SWU), 25-11.

Going against newbies Lorie Mae Layno and Jessa Satina came easy for Sabas and Simbajon, as the game was concluded in just a few minutes.

The win was USJ-R’s fourth straight in as many games, assuring them of title. The competition follows a format where the team with the most number of wins will get the crown.

This was SWU’s only loss in the competition and puts them at second place with 3-1 win-loss record. Both SWU and USJ-R still have one more games each in the final day of competition this Saturday.

Whatever the outcome, USJ-R’s championship will no longer be affected. USJ-R still has a last game this weekend against a winless University of Cebu, while SWU take on CDU.

Meanwhile, Grace Antigua said that she is hoping that USJ-R will pull off a twinkill in the competition.

Antigua’s men’s team, Ariel Carumba and Lougie Tipgos are currently on top of the men’s draw with 4-0 record. (MCB)
