CPPO chief asks station heads to use initiative in fight v. crime
TO put a stop to problems such as unauthorized drag races, Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) Director Carmelo Valmoria is urging police chiefs to “think outside of the box.”
Following the wounding of six spectators and the arrest of two men who caused the accident in Sibonga last Saturday night, police in the town said they have difficulty arresting those behind the races because they immediately disperse at the sight of police patrol cars.
“The chief of police should also make initiatives. They can go there incognito so they will not be recognized,” Valmoria said.
He noted the dangers of holding races along the highway and admitted he was in favor of imposing a curfew to minors.
However, he said implementing the curfew will have to depend on the local government units through local ordinances.
He said most crimes happen between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Police in Sibonga earlier said they have been receiving reports of races in the middle of the night.
But every time they try to apprehend those responsible, the perpetrators are gone. Apparently somebody tips them off, he said.
Two persons were arrested as a result of the accident and are now detained at the Sibonga Police Station.
The race, which starts in Baragnay Ocaña, Carcar City, ends in Barangay Abongon in Sibonga.
Since those behind the races merely wait for the police to leave, Valmoria said he has instructed police chiefs to practice visibility and conduct checkpoints.
Anyone who witnesses a drag race should immediately call the police, he said. (MEA)
