53-year-old tops Billiards Idol
FIFTY-three year old Roberto Dy showed he can still slug it out with the young guns as he won the second leg of the Sarch of the New Billiards Idol in Quezon City last Sunday night.
Dy, of the Negros Billiards Stable, created a name of himself after years of toiling in pocket tournament in Negros and pocketed the P10,000 top prize and an Edwin Reyes cue after beating Manolo Tanasas, 9-6, in the final.
It was not an easy win for Dy as he faced tough challenges in the tournament, which attracted a number of billiard hopefuls.
He was down 3-5 in the final before recovering his game and pocketed six of the last seven racks to win the crown.
On his way to the finals, Dy defeated Robert Wang (7-2), first leg semifinalist Chris Bombita (7-2), Danny Tayo (7-5) and Japan-based Roel Essquillo (7-2) in the semifinals.
Tanasas, on the other hand, march into the finals after demolishing two-time semifinalist Ricky Gamboa, 7-1, in the final four. He also defeated RJ Chua, 7-1, Rudy Morta, 7-4, Boy Ducanes, 7-6, and Joey Pardales, 7-1, in the earlier rounds. (NSM)
