USJ-R gets q'final spot in Shakeys V-League

THE University of San Jose Recoletos volleyball team was given free passes to be one of the provincial competitors of the Shakeys V-League which starts this month in Manila.

Not only that, USJ-R need not have to toil through a long elimination process as they were given a bye and will directly compete in the quarterfinal round.

A huge number of teams will be taking part in the competition. USJ-R will be added as a wildcard entry in the quarterfinals.

Another team invited to play is University of St. La Salle of Bacolod City. Both Visayas teams will be flying to Manila on May 3 in time for the quarterfinal round.

USJ-R head coach Grace Antigua said they were invited following their unprecedented grand slam in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi).

Antigua’s wards, which are set to represent Cebu in the national Private Schools Athletic Association this month, will have to contend playing without its main protagonist Julette Mae Marikit, the team captain, who had steered the team to three championship titles in the Cesafi from 2005-2007.

USJ-R, however, will have former RP Youth team members Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon. It will also be beefed up by Aina Laroga, Joy Bonita and Angielove Cabiles. (MCB)
