Inmate grapples with gun of cop, hits own foot

A DETAINEE at the Casuntingan Police Station in Mandaue City was shot in the foot after he allegedly grabbed the gun of his police escort last Sunday.

Police Chief Abraham Ocampo said they filed a complaint against Arnold Miñosa, 38, yesterday for assaulting PO1 Renato Berdon.

Miñosa had been arrested and brought to the station around 3:30 a.m. upon the orders of Tingub Barangay Captain Mario Bihag for malicious mischief. (It was not known in detail what acts he committed.)

Later that afternoon, Miñosa asked to go to the toilet.

On their way there, he allegedly grabbed Berdon’s gun, and the two wrestled for it. The gun fell and went off. Splinters wounded Miñosa’s ankle.

PO1 Sandre Torres brought him to the hospital. After treatment, he was returned to his cell.

Station personnel also figured in some controversy after they were wrongly accused of padlocking the precinct at dawn last Saturday.

Joel Batiancila was run over by a motorcycle whose passengers also allegedly robbed him.

Although injured, he said he managed to get to the station and knocked on the door. It was closed and there was no answer. So he went home.

What he didn’t know was that he had knocked on the door of the Barangay Health Office.

Ocampo admitted that they close one of the station’s two doors at night, and leave the other one ajar for security reason.

They don’t want anyone from the street tossing some explosives into the station through the door, he said.

Ocampo said they keep all the lights inside the station on overnight. (OCP)
