Wednesday, March 05, 2008 VAAA gives way to semis for top teams
EXCITEMENT is written all over the upcoming semifinal matches of the 2008 Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) which will be on the last weekend of March at the Cebu Coliseum.
VAAA Commissioner Jose “Boy” Murillo announced that he was forced to cancel all the other games, which are all non-bearing to give way to the semifinal round the top four Cebu teams, University of the Visayas Green Lancers, Southwestern University Cobras, University of San Carlos Warriors and the Asian College of Technology Cyber Tigers.
“Actually, there are still elimination games left for the other teams but it’s all non-bearing since the top teams in each bracket were already known. I had consulted with our league organizer Yayoy Alcoseba, and he has approved it. I also talked with the coaches involved and they are amenable to my idea to save money and efforts,” said Murillo.
The elimination round of VAAA has dragged a long way following cancellation of some games and to give way to bigger and more compelling events that clashed with its schedules.
According to Murillo, teams like Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology, Asian College of Science and Technology and Foundation University of Dumaguete, Bohol Institute of Technology and Western Leyte College, all still had games left but agreed to cancel them since it would not affect the standings.
The upset victory of SWU Cobras over the UV Lancers last week for the 2008 NSBC Inter-Collegiate title paved the way to an exciting meeting between the two.
SWU (6-0) and UV (6-0) topped their respective brackets and in the semifinals, the Cobras will take on Group B No. 2 ACT Cyber Knights and the Lancers will play Group A No.1 USC Warriors. (RCM)
