Road mishaps in Sibonga, Tabogon kill 2, injure 11

TWO men died and 11 others were injured in two vehicular accidents since Tuesday, both of them involving vehicles delivering goods.

Mark Lapay died immediately after the van he was driving plowed into a Ceres Bus in Barangay Ilihan, Tabogon yesterday afternoon.

SPO1 Samuel Malazarte of the Tabuelan police said that two of Lapay’s companions in the van that carried Nestle Philippines products were also injured. So were two passengers on the front seat of the bus. These four victims were unidentified.

Malazarte told Sun.Star Superbalita that the van was heading for a warehouse club in Bogo, while the bus, with Ruben Castañeda driving, was bound for the same city but on the other lane.

The two crashed some 20 meters from a blind curve. The bus had just swerved to avoid a parked truck, but hit the van instead.

“The impact wrecked the van. It spun after the collision and blocked the middle of the road,” Malazarte said in Cebuano.

In a previous accident, one passenger was killed and seven were wounded when a truck carrying vegetables ran out of control and crashed into trees in the southern town of Sibonga Tuesday afternoon.

Esperidion Quevedo, 40, died on the spot, pinned between the truck and the trees at the side of the road in Barangay Abogon past 4 p.m. He hails from Barangay Calariohan, Dalaguete town.

The other identified passengers were Esperidion’s wife Apolonia, Marcial Asenjo, 45, Allan Dicdican, 33, Danilo Neri, 37, Cristita Quevedo, 45, and Andres dela Peña, 18.

They were taken to the Carcar City District Hospital.

Driver Leonardo Nepomuceno, 45, escaped with a single scratch on one of his brows.

Four other passengers were not identified but they were not harmed when the truck crashed into the trees.

The Isuzu Forward truck came from Dalaguete town and was on its way to Cebu City when, upon reaching a curve, it tipped over because of its load.

Nepomuceno lost control of the vehicle until it crashed into a clump of mahogany and coconut trees. The truck then landed on its side.

Nepomuceno hails from Barangay Sacsac, Dalaguete town.

He surrendered to the Sibonga Police Station. (MEA/With DRT of Superbalita)
